Critical and Contextual Issues - Final Essay Submission

This is my abstract for my essay- We talked about it in one of the lectures and Ross suggested we write on for our essay -

Abstract -

Through the use of statistics and research gathered, this essay explores whether or not there has been a significant change in women's roles in the Animation Industry since the 1940s.

It discusses both contemporary and 1940's society and considers/ compares whether these variables have affected the above question.

Evaluation -

I feel I the essay has gone well and I have included all the information I could have. I do feel I could improve by:

  • Being able to cut down more of my words as I feel I spoke about the 1940s/50s more than I should of But I also feel I needed to, to get the point across and to give background.
  • Maybe use better resources, although most of them are by professionals and statistics some are blogs and websites and could be considered unreliable
Overall though I am happy with the outcome.

Creative Compositing - Final Submission and Presentation

What is it about?

My composite is about a woman who is taking pictures of the St Peter's Church, in Wolverhampton. When she looks through the camera to take a picture, she can see a fantasy world, where the clouds are a different colour. A cartoon gargoyle then appears and fly's around the church. In shock she drops the camera and this brings he back to the normal world.

Inspiration

As previously mentioned I took inspiration from Guilherme Mercondes as he uses animation on real life footage. He also uses bright colours, for his animation, which went with the idea that I had.

This is the video I got the inspiration from  - http://www.guilherme.tv/caveirao

I also took inspiration from Elton John's - Wonderful Crazy Night Album Advert. In this advert, when he camera looks through the glasses, things start to move and appear. This is where i got the inspiration for looking through the camera, as i thought it would be an interesting way to look at a different world and fantasy creatures.

This is the advert - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntRQBy415M8

Storyboards -

Nothing has really changed in my storyboards, the only thing that slightly changed, is where the camera drops. In the storyboard it says to zoom out first the drop, but I changed this in my composite to it just dropping as the zoom out looked weird. I also changed the colour of the clouds in th fantasy world, which I have explained below.

Workflow

Background - I started off by looking for stormy weather videos, where the clouds could be seen moving. I was going to film my own cloud footage but I did not have enough time and when I did have time the clouds were not how I wanted them.

When it is the fantasy world I changed the curves of the video and made it a purple colour. I did not just want black and white through all of it, I wanted the fantasy world to look different with some things brightly coloured. This also helps to distinguish between the two worlds.

I also adjusted the contrast of the clouds to make them stand out.

Below is a picture of the purple clouds

Still Image - I chose to take a picture of the St Peter's Church as it looked very old and matched the gargoyle look. I took variety of pictures so I had many from different angles. The picture I orinally used for the tests was not good for the end composite, as it had a tree in it that made the church look weird so I chose another image I had already taken. Which I put into Photoshop to remove the background and then imported it into the composite. I used the same photo but zoomed in for the fantasy world, where it is zoomed in into the top of the spire.

Live Action/ Chroma-Key -   For this I filmed my hands moving the camera up and down. I didn't really need much live action as I didn't want any of the body in it properly just the hands, so the audience is the woman trying to take the picture. I had to re shoot the footage because the first lot did not have enough lighting and wasn't shot from the right angle.

Animation - For the animation I wanted it to look like a cartoon and not realistic. The point of it was to be looking at a fantasy world and I wanted this to be obvious to the audience. I also didn't want it to be too scary looking, I liked the stormy background and it being in black and white to give off a creepy atmosphere but I didn't want the gargoyle to be scary. He is a bright blue because as previously stated I wanted him to stand out and he is in a fantasy world and this matched this.

To create the animation I started off just drawing the body and then once I was happy I would each feature one at a time.

To put in into my composite I cut the animation and layered it so it would fly around the church.

Final animation - https://vimeo.com/163804849

Added Touches - In the normal world, I blurred the church slightly so the camera and church were not the same focus as together they were to look at. I also added a shadow to the animation, which was tricky as some i=of it goes onto the clouds and I could not change this. In the fantasy world I chose to add some green screen footage of a camera screen to give it more of an affect of the audience looking through the camera.

Sound - The sound I have talked about on a previous blog post. I chose some creepy music to add to the atmosphere and added a storm sound that you can hear when the gargoyle appears.

Final Composite -

Evaluation -

I am very happy with the overall composite, I feel that the components go well together and I have achieved what I wanted to achieve.

Things I could improve on  -

the chroma key could of been better as I had top match up some of the arm as it cut off at a weird point.

I feel the church looks a little flat sometimes, like a still image and maybe I could have it from a different angle next time to make it have more depth.

I could also next time shoot more stuff myself, like the clouds and the camera screen

I could also work on the shadow of my gargoyle fixing it so it doesn't have a weird shadow in the sky.

Final Submission

I am very happy with the progress of my animations, I personally see a big improvement from some of the first ones. I have taken on the feedback given to me and tried to change it to make them look better I am pleased with the end result.

If I could change anything I would change my shock. I feel the shock is the animation that is letting me down the most and is my least favorite. At the time it seemed like a good idea and I really like the reference video, but for some reason I struggle to translate this into the animation.

I could also work more on the timing of some of the animations making as some of them are not quite as good as they maybe could of been.

Exaggeration is a big thing I need to work on, I don't know why but sometime I struggle to push the exaggeration and I need to learn when it is a good time to do this.

Model

I am pleased with the end result, although there is still a lot I can work on. If I had more time I would fix the hair better at the front and change some of the face as when it is mirrored it does not look as good as when it isn't.
I didn't manage to put the teeth and mouth, which is something I would want to continue with.
I also did not have time to smooth her legs and so they still look boxy. Going forward I have learnt a lot and feel more comfortable with Maya and actually enjoy Modelling. I think this will be something I carry on with over the summer.

Critical and Contextual Issues - Final Presentation

This is My Final Presentation

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_9Pf3R60qz_UjN0dGNja1ZBTWM

This is the notes I had with it for each slide -

Slide 1 – title –
Why :
u  I chose to look into this topic as I am very interested in gender related topics
u  The female perspective
u  I chose to look into women portrayed in animations last year, and this year I wanted to look at women in the industry

Slide 2 - Structures of my essay

Slide 3 – History
started off by researching the 1940s/50s – and researching the social norms and gender roles –
I found that when America joined the war the women stepped up and took over some of the roles they wouldn’t normally have had
and society was fine with this until the men returned and they wanted their jobs back that they had to leave or society did not approve
it was the woman’s role to have dinner ready, look after the children, husband and household – this was the same for work – women only had ‘female’ related jobs, like a secretary, nurse
this slide is from a text book that was used in schools in the 1950’s

slide 4 this is what it looked like originally
this instilled from a young age that this is the only thing a woman should do, nothing else and that this is how to do it properly

slide 5 –
watch videos decide which one I will play

Slide 6
I used similar images in my essay to show how advertisements were portraying women in their homes cleaning and cooking as a normal, happy thing to do. There is nothing about working apart from the war and even then its sexist.

Similar to the textbook
It was everywhere that women had to act a certain way to marry a man and have a husband and children, otherwise she wouldn’t be happy

Slide 8
Compared to today’s society – although not completely different – there has been a massive difference in the amount of women that work
Risen from 18 million in 1950 to 66 million in 2000
in the 1950s there had been the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Rights Movement, that opened up opportunities for women to work out of their homes. Women were also being seen more of as equals to males in the political sector, which was an improvement compared to how it had been many years ago.
This has been due to
Women remained single more often.
• Of those who married, many did so later in life, and the
median age at first marriage increased substantially.
• Women elected to stay in school longer, achieving higher
educational attainment than in the past and pursuing
better paying careers.
• Women postponed childbirth to older ages and had fewer
children than in previous decades. As a result of improved
child care, women tended to enter the labor force even
before their children started school, and they were able
to maintain a longer job tenure than in previous periods.
• Women got divorced more often; this in itself increased
their labor force participation rate.11

slide 9 –
in the 1950s
women only could work in the inking and painting department
this is a rejection letter saying that women cannot become animators
walt didn’t like women to work in the other departments because they would get trained up and then leave to get married and this was all because of societies views on what women should do
“Each time they were beginning to get good they’ve quit to get married or something. So now he’s thumbs down on girl animators.” (Rae, Vanity Fair)
slide 10 – Rae was a women that while I research I can upon
While I was researching I found a post about ‘the girls’ (inkers and painter, it mentioned many women but specifically a woman called Rae (no last name).
Patricia Zohn writes about Disney’s ink-and-paint girls in this month’s Vanity Fair. She started researching the topic after speaking to her aunt, Rae Medby McSpadden, a former ink-and-paint artist. Most of the facts will be familiar to animation history buffs, but it’s a well-written slice-of-life piece that adds color to the bygone days:
From the picture you can see that shew did end up becoming an animator but she did only in 1966
After there was the changes I talked about in the last slide

Slide 11 – it was normal for the women to have significally less money than the male animators
Less wage – “new girls were still only making $18 per week while top animators made $300 per week.” (Zohn)
Hiring because they look healthy - “Marie Foley Justice found out later her application had noted her young, healthy looks, which, she quipped, indicated “They figured I could stand up under the over time”” (Zohn)
Worked hard - During Snow White, it was not at all unusual to see the “girls”–as Walt paternalistically referred to them–thin and exhausted, collapsed on the lawn, in the ladies’ lounge, or even under their desks. “I’ll be so thankful when Snow White is finished and I can live like a human once again,” Rae wrote after she recorded 85 hours in a week. “We would work like little slaves and everybody would go to sleep wherever they were,” said inker Jeanne Lee Keil, one of two left-handers in the department who had to learn everything backward. “I saw the moon rise, sun rise, moon rise, sun rise.” Painter Grace Godino, who would go on to become Rita Hayworth’s studio double, also remembered the long days merging into nights: “When I’d take my clothes off, I’d be in the closet, and I couldn’t figure it out: am I going to sleep or am I getting up?”

Slide 12 –
there is still not enough women in the industry and having leading roles
overall there maybe more women in the workforce but it is still not equal

women and men do not have equal pay

For this presentation I tried to add things that I had researched around my subject and link it to my essay, I din't want to just copy my essay. The links I got some of the information off of are all on the presentation.

3D Production - 11 Second Club/ Lip sync

I chose to use the sound track 'Party' for my 11 second club. In the references you will see below I tried many variants of acting for it. From sitting down, to standing and having more than one person in the scene. This variety made it hard for me to chose the final reference I wanted to go with, because they were all different and had different things to add to the animation.

compilation of references -
https://vimeo.com/165881377

The reference I went with I feel was a good choice as it got across the drunk vibe and I liked the movement that was in it.

Reference I am going with -
https://vimeo.com/165881322

I then started to animate. I started with the bosy first as thius is how I always work and seem most logical to me .

Starting to animate the body

body finished
https://vimeo.com/165880865

I next added the face bit by bit, starting wiht the eyes, then the lips and then lastly the eybrows.

adding the lips

Final animation
https://vimeo.com/165880909

I am very pleased with the overall result and feel it matches my reference video and exaggerates it where needed. I also feel I have done well trying to match the lip sync.

I feel I could improve as some parts are jumpy and I had so much trouble with the elbow, Even when I deleted it all, it was still moving all over the place, so if I could I would want to change that most.

3D Production - Model this Week

This is all the pictures of all the things I changed and added this week.

below I have finished the hair, so it is in a bun. I found this challenging as I couldn't get it exactly the right shape I was going for. But I feel the overall result does look similar to hair.

I have also added an eye and shaped the eye lid to do around the eye.

I extruded the eyebrow and then added and extra edge looke to keep the shape of it.
More close ups of the hair:

I extruded the hair and tried to shape so it looked like the fringe had been scraped back.

I made section go in more than others to give a creased look, so it wasn't all smooth.

I next started working on the hand. I had already created a mitten before we were taught how to do the hand preoperly but it was fixable. I deleted the thumb, like shown below.
I next extruded the thumb back out and extruded the fingers out
As the picture below shows I did not extrude the fingers out properly so I  deleted them and started again.
This is much better and done properly
I added knuckles but when I tried to shape them they did not look right and would only stay in one shape.

I then extruded nails, which I feel make the hands look more feminine. I am overall happy but I feel I had to rush them and if I had any more time the hand would look better.

Creative Compositing - Week 12 - The Final Version

For this week I had spoken to Isaiah for things to change in my composite. He suggested I add a shadow to the gargoyle when it fly's in front of the church. He also said that the sound of the added storm need to fade out rather than just cut off as it sounded a bit weird. I understood and have fixed these issues. This is my final composite.

https://vimeo.com/165581507

I am very happy with is and I think the sound and the shadow adds to the composite and makes it look and sound better.

3D Production - Animation Corrections

Phone Call -

https://vimeo.com/165420968

After the feedback I got yesterday I went through and adjusted the timing of the annoyed huff at the beginning to make it slower. I also exaggerated the slumped and pulled his shoulder more up as he breathed and pushed his body more when he let our the breather. I fell it looks much better.

Letter Box -

https://vimeo.com/165424003

I took the feedback and made sure I pushed the body and the hip more so it looked like he was searching in his pocket. I also made him look down which I feel has really improved the animation and made it look much better and get across what I wanted.

I feel I do need to work on pushing the body more to get the right shape, because at the moment I do it enough.

Shock -

https://vimeo.com/165433573

The feedback for this one was to off set the eye squint, with the body and the hand going down. I have tried to do this and fell it looks better, but I have struggled constantly with this reaction and I don't think I have completely got across what I wanted to.

Critical and Contextual Issues - Week 12 - Power Point Presentation Ideas

When I went through the resources I had some of them that didn't fit in with my essay but fit more with what I wanted to put in my essay.

I didn't want the presentation to be an exact copy of the essay but to include and expand what I had written and researched about.

What I want to include:

  • the history - sexist advertisements and stereotypes - video maybe about this - men don't like to work with women
  • start off looking at the stereotypes of women were the cooks, cleaners and baby makers
  • then look at now a day and contemporary society - statistics that i used in my essay and maybe find more
  • Animation industry - application rejection letter - Rae the woman from one of the resources, saying her own experiences.
  • what they had to go through - the reasons for hiring beautiful women
  • maybe look into a specific woman
  • evaluation

The above is just a brief outline of what I want to include - this will all be expanded on when I write my presentation.

3D Production - Week 12 - Tutorials

Emily looked at the work I had done so far. I showed her the animation I had finished and she gave me feedback about a few things I could change in them.

Phone Call - exaggerate the huff, so it looks more annoyed and slow it down

Letterbox - Bend hips, so it is really leaning to look into the pocket, bend the face down more so he is looking at the pocket

Shock - off time the body moving back, the hand going down and the eye squint, and make the body move back faster

I will make sure I go back and correct these things.

Model:

After getting feedback of Emily I went round my model correcting certain things.

I started with the ankle and foot of my model and it need more geometry since it moved a lot and there wasn't enough.

I then started the shape the face a bit more, I wanted to define the jaw and cheek bone more as it needed to be more defined, because it wasn't there before.

First for the hair I tried to make a wig, but it was turning out terribly and wasn't fitting to the head so I decided to try something else. I tried to extrude the hair, but I found it was not working the way I wanted it too, so I stopped and will carry on with it another day.

Below is the start of the wig I tried to make and once I realised it wasn't going to work I stopped and tried to extrude
I also did the ear in this session, I was pretty lucky with where some of the geometry was placed on the head and so I extruded the ear and shape it. Once I was happy I then extruded the midlle bit inwards to give it a better shape.

The nose I had originally I had just pulled it out, this was right, so with the help of Emily I extruded it and shaped it. I then extruded and pushed a square up into the nose to make the shape of the nostril. This is much better than the nose I had had before.
