Completed Animatic - Dancer

https://vimeo.com/117195666

Synopsis:

A young teenage girl, called Molly, aged around 17 years old is a plus size dancer. She has always been bullied for her size and thinking she can dance. At a competition she is again made fun of by a group of girls. Although they laugh Molly ignores them and dances, blocking everyone out. She tells the audience a story while she dances about how she became a dancer. In the end she come second in the competition, but she doesn't care where she comes, it wasn't about winning, it was about showing everyone that she could dance no matter what size she is.

I first came up with the idea at the Bradford Animation festival watching some of Joanna Quinn's work. I didn't have the full idea, i just came up with the basic outline. After talking to different people in the class they helped me come up with end result.

I feel the target audience would be mainly aimed towards young girls who are facing similar situations in their, maybe not through dancing but generally in life. Although i feel that a lot of different audiences might relate to being bullied, the younger audience might relate more as it is a young teenage girl as the protagonist.

I enjoyed making this animatic as it was nice to see the end result come to life. If i ever came back to this i think i would change some of the dance moves and draw then in different points of views and overall try and draw it better and in more detail.

Thumbnails for ideas.

My online dating, i wanted to tell the story from both sides, so it moves to show the girl and the boy and their points of view all the way through.

The Dancer idea is my main idea i will be making into a storyboard. at this point i had changed some things like add a screen to the background to tell the story of how she became a dancer in the first place.

My third idea i have done so it is in her own bedroom like any teenager would be and she is becoming frustrated that she cannot find a style that fits her. After remembering something someone once told her she realises that she could be a part of the all the different styles.

Week 9 - Task 2 Short story Presentation

This was my presentation for that week, but i was ill, so instead i asked through facebook what people thought about my ideas and asked for some ideas. I got feedback on the dancer idea, to take the audience on a journey through her dancing. So i decided to add her telling the story of how she became a dancer in the background. But i didn't want to take away from her dancing, so i have her at parts stop dancing so the story can play.

3 story ideas - initial ideas

Week 8 - Daption, working with found resources

If you are struggling for an idea you could turn to the written word for inspiration. Poems and speeches, but a more obvious example to refer to would be folktales. Famously there are classic animated films such as: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast.

Forgetfulness by Billy Collins: https://vimeo.com/38356
Julian Grey is a Canadian based animator(headgear), he was comissioned by JWT entertainment in 2005.
Made in collaboration with popular Poet Billy Coliins, Julians film explores the the effects of fading memeory and middle age, told in a wimsical and evocative way.
This film only took 5 weeks to animate!
“We wanted the sound to be scratchy, like it was being received through an old telephone handset, to suggestand anecdotal, distant nature of the poem”. Julian.

THE DEAD, by Billy Collins who is a former, US Poet Laureate and one of America's best-selling poets, reads his poem "The Dead" with animation by Juan Delcan. Produced at Nola Pictures / Agency JWT New York / Commissioned by The Sundance Channel. https://vimeo.com/23220281

To This Day is a project based on a spoken word poem written by Shane Koyczan (shanekoyczan.com) called “To This Day”, to further explore the profound and lasting impact that bullying can have on an individual. Animators and motion artists brought their unique styles to 20 second segments that will thread into one fluid voice. This collaborative volunteer effort demonstrates what a community of caring individuals are capable of when they come together https://vimeo.com/59956490

Task: Find a poem/sound recording/speech/script/short story/ Quote… something that really inspires you!!! Take that piece of inspiration and make a storyboard of it. Be experimental with the materials you use.

Week 9 - homework - Storyboard of a poem

Do Less - Unknown

Wise words for when we are caught up in doing more ...

Do less thinking
And pay more attention to your heart
Do less aquiring
And pay more attention to what you already have

Do less complaining
And pay more attention to giving
Do less controlling
And pay more attention to letting go

Do less criticizing
And pay more attention to complimenting
Do less arguing
And pay more attention to forgiveness

Do less running around
And pay more attention to stillness
Do less talking
And pay attention to silence

I liked this poem because of what it was saying. It is right sometimes we do have to do less of things of pay more attention to other things we ignore because of how busy we are.

It was a struggle at first to find a poem that i could relate to or get inspired by, but when i found this poem it was easy to imagine what i would do.
