Advanced 2D - Animatics

Animatic

First rough Animatic

This is my first animatic i did for this animation, i just used the storyboard drawing and timed them to the voice over so i could get a rough idea of timings.

Rough Animatic 2

This is the same animatic as the one above but i have started to add more in between frames to see how it will start to look.

Rough tree growing

After showing Isaiah my animatic and we talked it through, i realised that the camera nearly always in the same place and although the idea was good it could be better if i changed parts to make them more interesting. For example the link above is a rough animation of the tree growing, at the moment it looks quite boring and may seem jumpy, so I thought I could change it that we follow the trunk itself as it grows. The camera will be zoomed in and follow it and then it will reveal the tree. I will be line tests to see if this idea looks good.

Advanced 2D - Storyboard

For my animation i have decide to follow what is going on in the poem and create it. For the end though i am going to change it and have the grandfather and grandchild holding hands and walking away with a bright light around them as this will signify the grandfathers death and his soul.

I got my boyfriend to talk through the poem to work out rough timings, which is around 50 seconds.
I thought of cutting the poem down to 30 seconds but i could not find a right place to do this and i feel if i had cut the poem down it would not of had the same affect or emotion as the full poem. Therefor I have chosen to do the full 50 seconds.

 Initial Storyboard:

Stand tall oh mighty oak, for all the world to see,
your strength and undying beauty forever amazes me.
Though storm clouds hover above you,

The tree will grow big and strong from a tiny sapling and then storm clouds will come and it will start to rain.

your branches span the sky,
in search of the radiant sunlight you
count on to survive.

The storm clouds will go and the tree with stretch out it's branches and reach for the sun.

When the winds are high and restless and
you lose a limb or two,
it only makes you stronger, we
could learn so much from you.
Though generations have come and gone
and brought about such change,
quietly you've watched them all yet still
remained the same.

A strong wind will blow the tree to the side and then some branches will fall off. When the wind stops the tree will look very bare and then the leaves will grow back. People will start to come on and off the screen doing different things, similar to what happens in a park.

I only pray God give to me the strength he's
given you,
to face each day with hope, whether
skies are black or blue,
Life on earth is truly a gift
every moment we must treasure,
it's the simple things we take for granted
that become our ultimate pleasures.

It will then zoom in so we are looking up at the tree and the sky will change colour. It will zoom in more to a bright light then back out to reveal a grandfather and grandchild holding hand and walking into the light. The light will fill the screen and it will end.

Character Development - Week 4 - Chosen Character

From the presentation of my two characters Molly and Liv, everyone liked both of my characters but Molly was voted the favourite.

The feedback i got was to draw her as different characters she could be to show how she is shy as her normal self and more confident as the characters she imagines herself as. I was also to look at Nim's Island for inspiration for my character.

Advanced 2D - More Research

For this week of Advanced 2D i have to been drawing different styles of trees from the ones i liked off the collage.

The one on the left is similar to the sketchy style that i like but compared to the one on the right i like that one more. It is still sketchy but it is more detailed and neat which i like better. I think this is the style i want my tree to be and of similar colour because the colours are very vibrant and make the tree stand out and more interesting. Since most of the animation is about the tree and it is the main focus i don't want the audience to get bored of it i want them to be drawn to the tree all the way through.

I looked at trees growing and blowing in the wind on Youtube to help see how to draw it in my animation.

Although this was done on the computer it was very helpful as it showed how the tree grew and how the leaves moved which will help me a lot.

This video will help me when i am doing the tree blowing in the wind in my animation. I will be able to see what it looks like in real life and hopefully recreate it in mine. I will also be able to see the shape of the tree and how the tree is affected in the wind.

Innovative - Week 4 - Osbert Parker

This week we looked at Osbert Parker, this is his website: http://www.osbertparker.com/

His signature style is stop motion, using cut outs and live action film mixed together. He has worked for and made commercials for big named products such as: Budweiser, Nike, Coca Cola.

The above link is for his Coca Cola advert. I like this advert because it combines lots of different medias both 3D and 2D. It is very different to a lot of commercials out there which makes it stand out and stay in an audiences mind.

The link above is for a showreel of the films and Television animations he has created. I like his style a lot because of the use of cut outs and taking parts of old films and putting them in new settings. The use of different objects for the background is also cool. In one of his films he used old bookcases and chest of draws and added bits and pieces to them to make them look like houses.

After we discussed Osbert's work were each given a sequence of an animal or human in different sequences. We could then use these in our animation and to help with an idea. Next we were put into random groups, my group consisted of Raj, Julia and myself.

Character Development - Week 4 - Final Characters

Character 1 - Molly :
At age 20 she doesn’t party or socialise, she sits in her room or library as she likes to call it, with books stacked up everywhere in every nook and cranny. The smell of leather and new paper fills the air as Molly turns the pages in her book. She gently moves a clump of hair back into her messy bun, never taking her eyes off the words, like the story would change if she were to look away. Captivated by the book, she becomes the lead character, a detective, once again becoming part of the story that she loves to read.

Inspiration:

My idea for Molly came from looking at People of New York, i was looking through and found the picture and quote below. I could picture the character straight away. How she would be a young girl who read books and would be so taken in by the stories she became the characters she was reading.

“I’ve fallen in love with literature. I try to read for one or two hours every day. I only have one life to live. But in books I can live one thousand lives.”

(Rasht, Iran)

I knew i wanted her to look simple so she could easily change and take on the character from a book. I feel if she was too complicated she wouldn't be able to take on another character.

Initial sketches:

I started off by sketching faces and hair styles and changing the shapes of the heads. The face i chose is simple but still shows that she is female and is 20 years old.

I then sketched different bodies and and faces to see how changing proportions would look.

I took the face that i liked the best and the drew different head shapes to see which one would look the best with the face.

My final character design:

Character 2 - Liv

She's not one to run her company from her high tech, fancy office. Liv is the brains of the operation and gets stuck in. People sometimes misinterpret her confident, sarcastic manner for being too cocky, and maybe she is, but she doesn't care what anyone thinks. She has worked damn hard to get to where she is.

Inspiration:
I was inspired by my top three characters when i created Liv. I wanted her to be cocky, sarcastic and confident but very intelligent and self made. Similar to Tony Stark and Rocket Raccoon. I then wanted her to be like Terk also and so i made her female but 'one of the guys', going against gender stereotypes. A lot of people perceive powerful women to be 'Bitches' but a powerful man is normal and so i wanted to create a character that is a powerful and just does not care what people think of her she is not a so called 'Bitch' she deserves what she has as she has worked hard for it.

There are sarcastic, cocky, self made and intelligent

She is 'one of the guy's and goes against the gender stereotypes

Sketches of different body proportions:

My final character design:

I felt that with her personality she would have sharp feature and a black pointy bob. She is a powerful woman and I wanted her to have a tall model like body with tiny waste with sharp edges.

Character Development - Week 3

Character Sketch:

She sits in her room or library as she likes to call it, with books stacked up everywhere in every nook and cranny. The smell of leather and new paper fills the air as Holly turns the pages in her book. She gently moves a clump of hair back into her messy bun, never taking her eyes off the words, like the story would change if she were to look away. Captivated by the book, she becomes a detective, once again becoming part of the story that she loves to read.

In class we put our character sketches in different parts of the room and the went round drawing each other character from the character sketches. It was a good to see whether people understood the personality of your character and what they thought it would look like.

Below are the drawings i got from my character sketch:

I realised that I would have to change my character sketch slightly. Although some people understood what i wanted my character to be like, a lot of the class got confused with the detective part, which i will make clearer and her age, which i will specify for next week.
