Advanced 2D - More scenes finished

These are some more scenes I have finished.

Guy throwing a frisbee and the dog catching it.

https://vimeo.com/151825643

I wanted there to be some animation in this scene so i chose to have the guy throwing a frisbee and the dog catching it and running off. I didn't want them to be coloured as i don't want them to take away from the tree that is why they are just a black outline.

Finished park scene.
https://vimeo.com/151825652

I chose to have just the other people doing things in the park just pop up and not be animated as i wanted it to be kind of like pictures of them in the park. Again like above they are just in the black outline.

Sky scene:

https://vimeo.com/151825521

I chose to do it from this angle as i wanted to have some movement from just the tree standing there. I think it looks better as you as the audience look like you are looking up at the sky.

Grandad photo scene.
https://vimeo.com/151825319

I based the photo off my grandad, he is still alive but i see him as being like an oak tree in our family and it meant i could get around using a copyright photo.

I drew it sketchy to match the rest of the animation and the room is just the outline to not take away from the picture. I feel this meant everything was consistant.

Innovative - Finished Set Design

After we had made all the set we then had to paint it all and add the bricks. We both really liked the effect it gave and felt that it made them stand out more.
For the base colour we used a reddish brown and grey for all of them, using a different shade for the balconies and doors. This process took the least amount of time as we made batches of paint mix and worked on it together.

We then went round and touched up anything like adding shading and little details.

To make the Lampposts we used a plastic hollow tube and cut a candle to fit it. We then used a Champagne wire top and attached it using thin wired and then melted candle wax to secure into place. We made two so we had both in case something went wrong.

Character Development - Redo of Final Look

With help from my tutor Emily I realised that the face proportions from the last finalised style post were not what my character really looked like and were much pointier, where she actually has a rounder face.

I found it very hard to get these proportions as I had first only drawn her looking away and that was easy but drawing her face on was difficult and hard, it was difficult to picture where her cheek bones and eyes should be.

Below are the new finalised style drawings:

Testing whether to have a pupil or not and getting her features in the right place -

The initial pose i started with but with pupils.

I feel she definitely looks likes my character and the way I pictured her. She is an average girl that looks sweet and isn't too attractive or too ugly but a good in between.

Innovative - More Buildings (Including Church)

One of the main buildings we had was the church in the end scene. The tower was build out of styrofoam as it was the right height and shape and then cardboared was added for detail. We wanted to make the church nicer than the normal buildings as in a way, it represents her last chance  at survival, so we decided to at stained glass to part of it and then we could have light shine behind it.

Stained glass- a template was drawn on a piece of paper and then the was glass cut to fit the shape. It was then covered in copper wire. Bethany's mum helped us with this element as she does stained glass.

Character Development - The Book Scene

The videos below are of me testing different ways Molly could enter the book.On a separate post I have done some research on different ways that movies and music videos have done it.

The first way I thought of and is in the new storyboard is for the book to start glowing and then as it gets brighter and brighter she disappears into the book.

https://vimeo.com/149023821

I then added this scene into the animatic.

https://vimeo.com/149026609

I realised while watching it that it didn't look as good as i thought it would and i know it wasn't animated properly this was just a test but it still looked weird and so i decided to look at a different way she could get into the book.

This next video is her almost being sucked into the book.

https://vimeo.com/149023269

I felt this worked much better as a way she would end up in the fall and once i had tried it in the animation it flowed a lot better.

Advanced 2D - Redoing the beginning scenes

Testing how the tree should grow.

https://vimeo.com/151825285

I had drawn in my storyboard the camera zooming into the leaf and then zooming out to show the full tree but when i started to do this i realised that the camera zoomed in way too fast because the of how long i had for the scene and so i had to change the idea.

This is the scene after the tree gets struck by lightning.

https://vimeo.com/151825276

I think this way of the tree growing is much better than the zoom in idea, as it doesn't move too fast and it is similar to the beginning growing scene.

The wind scene:

https://vimeo.com/151825345

I tried to make the wind scene match the rest of the animation so I drew the wind lines on. Since I wasn't going to have sound effects for the wind i thought this would be the best way.

Innovative - Tests and Research for Final Animation

Research:

We wanted the ground to look like it was wet and it had been rained on so we googled videos of how to create this look and came across the video below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Cw8xeWYaUA

Fog-
We also wanted there to be fog to make it more creepy and scary. So we tested how we could create the fog. We used incense sticks and then acetate over the top so we could try and keep the smoke from escaping.

Test 2

Wall textures(brick)-

We wanted the buildings to look as realistic as we could by having bricks patterns on them so we tested and researched different ways we could do this.

Using a gel did not give use enough of a difference between the cardboard and the brick and it still looked flat, we wanted the brick to be raise slightly.
ithg
Paper Mache’ we wanted to use for the wall and the cobble stone street but it took to much time to dry and make and it did not work for the brick as they were too small.
SAM_8150
Blobs of Glue looked col and we thought it would work when it was wet but as it dried it became weird and kind of deflated and so we chose not to use it.
SAM_8152

Our last test worked the best. We used different types of Styrofoam. Starting with the peanut type this did not look right and would not still to the wall properly, the shape of it was not like a brick. The second type worked the best we could cut it into rectangles and it looked like a brick, so we decided to paint them a similar colour to the building and then still them on after and the gave a nice contrast against a paint piece f cardboard.

Test of the first scene -

We wanted to test whether Bethany's camera would be good enough and capture what we wanted so we tested the beginning scene which we had cut out at the time.

 https://vimeo.com/151295648

Although we are happy with how the set looks, we noticed that the quality and lighting wasn’t great, so when it comes to filming the final bit, we will borrow out a camera/stand from the university.
