Animation Research and Practice - Week 4 - Extended Essay Research and Final Film Progress

Study Group Research for Extended Essay-

We met on Tuesday for our study group meeting and although we are all doing films for our final projects all four topics for our extended essays were very different. We decided to go through what each person wanted to write about, helping each other try and narrow it down or come up with things to look into. We then split up and started to try and find article for each other. This was extremely helpful as we could help each other and although we are not looking at similar topics we could still say ideas for each other.

These were the article I found for other people and myself and then the article they found for my subject.

Raj –  Evolution of family friendly animation

Bethany – sound

Nathan – noir or genre (horror or dark)

me – documentary animation and mental health

I still need to go through and read the link I got so I can try and narrow down my question, which I will hopefully have for next week.

Final Film Progress -

Ethics -

It was brought to my attention this week that I needed to think about ethics because of the topic I am dealing with. Although this had somewhat come across my mind in that I wanted to make sure my mum was okay and that everything was up to her, I hadn't thought about this as if she wasn't my mum. What would I have done if I had recorded another person about depression and what I would need to put in place and consider before doing this? My animation is being brought up in the next ethics meeting at the University and they will say whether or not everything is fine with what I have done, but until then I am going to write a ethics report making sure I understand what I should of done if it wasn't my mother.

Animation -

This week I wanted to try and get a better idea at what I wanted to create. Up until this point I had, had a basic idea of how I wanted it to be but because I hadn't had the voice over I didn't quite know what would happen. I had also researched a lot so that now that I have my voice over I have a better understanding of what I like and what I want the animation to do and look.

I started by going through the sound clips I had rerecorded from last week. I have narrowed it down to around a 75 second voice over. I felt this gave me the most inspiration when I imagined what I could do with it.

This is the clip below:

The clip of voice over I am using from Summer Davies-Newton on Vimeo.

As I listened to this section I could imagine a net type creature luring the main character, my mum, in and then grabbing her foot and pulling her down into the darkness. As she was being pulled down she would struggle and not be able to brake free. The monster would wrap all around her and then she would go limp. It would then go to her mind where everything would be dark and creepy and then lights would start to appear with different people in them shouting for her. The lights would continue until she wakes up, the lights take over the screen and she is able to swim free.

Refining the idea: scripting it better:

Me and Bethany went through both of our ideas trying to see what camera angles we would use and refining our ideas better.

The voice over is 1:11 minutes long, which give me plenty of time to play with timing.

  • It starts off with the female character floating into the water with sunbeams streaming through the water
  • she reaches out towards the light
  • you then see her dragged off screen
  • bubbles float up (all above up to 16 secs)
  • follows face from above being dragged down - almost drowning
  • her trying to escaped and but just being dragged down. (until 30secs)
  • net creature engulfs her and she is trying to fight it off and swim away
  • she ends up going lifeless(30-49 secs)
  • goes black (49-50)
  • cuts to her face being - closed eyes
  • the light streams on again
  • her eyes open quickly (until 55 secs)
  • starts to swim up taking the net with her
  • detaching from it as she is swimming
  • end with her being pulled back off screen
  • bubbles (until 71 secs)

Reference:

I started to look at different references for my animation. Particularly water and how people move in water and what it looks like to scream under water.

I need to do more research on the above as this is only picture I would prefer to have filmed references if possible, but it gives me a good idea for my initial sketch storyboards.

I also found the below videos to look at both animated and filmed water scenes.

Initial storyboards - (really rough)

The above are my initial sketches the story. I did not finish them for the lesson but by next week they will be much better, with more detail.

Styles -

I really like the look of this animation and I want a similar look in the face and eyes, very simple but emotional.

Lois Van Baarle - http://blog.loish.net/
The above link is to a blog by Lois and shows her work which is very fluid at times, which i envision for my animation. The picture below if one of her work and I like this sort of style mixed with the video above for my female character.

I also found the link below which are illustrations of mental illnesses and I liked the dark and sketchy style of them. Although I may not go this dark, I may use this to create my net creature.
I also liked this to see what other people see them as similarly liked the other link I posted on a previous blog post about another artist that does the same.
http://www.boredpanda.com/for-inktober-i-focused-on-mental-illness-and-disorders/?page_numb=1

I still need to look further into the style I want.

Colour -

Sam had asked us to bring in colour chips for this week. Bethany had brought a lot of different ones and so gave me some. As I was storyboarding I thought about what colours I might use. Since it was going to be in the ocean I knew I would need a lots of greens and blues, with maybe yellows for the sun beam. I need to research more into colours that you would find, but for now I have a rough idea of the colours I would like.

Below is what my space looks like and the colours I am thinking of using.

Professional Project - Week 4 - Project Progress and Showreels

Final Characters -

The feedback was to see whether the eyes on the Earth character could have no outline and instead have a shadow round them. Below is the Earth with and without an outline and the final Wifi character look.

Revised storyboards with added colour -

From last weeks feedback Jamie wanted me to add the new ending where the Earth character looks down at himself and sees hospital popping up on him. I have done this and also added the ETC lettering popping up when the internet is plugged back in.

I added colour to see what the overall look will be. I feel the colours go well together and I can start to look at creating an animatic.

Animatic -

I then put the storyboard into the animatic and timed it to the voice over we were given. I then added some foley sound for when the Earth hits the floor and the water splashes out of him.

I feel the beginning is timed well but the ending shot of the Earth with the hospitals goes on for too long. One way I am going to try and fix this that when the hospitals pop to add them popping up slower and the Earth reacting to it.

colour animatic with added sound pro project from Summer Davies-Newton on Vimeo.

I will send this all to Jamie and see what his feedback is.

Feedback -

After sending the above to Jamie, the feedback I got was that the timing of it was good apart from the ending, which I had discussed above and to go with the Earth character that has no outline around the eyes. Jamie suggested having the Wifi character put little badges on the Earth character to represent the different organisations and to reduce the amount of hospitals.

When I showed the above to Emily she also picked up on the ending and suggested a similar thing to what I suggested above and have the Earth reacting to them popping up.

I will take on board both suggestions and will play around with the ending for next week seeing what I can do in the last part of the voice over.

Lesson -

In this weeks lesson we discussed showreels and what is a good and bad showreel and all the elements that go into making a good one.

Some key points about a showreel:

  • When making one make sure it is specific for the job/role you are applying for and to not send it to everyone. This only wastes time for you and the employers.
  • It should be around 45 seconds - if it is too long people will shut off after awhile and it wont keep them engaged
  • Only include your best work - if you don'y like something don not include it, as if the employer asks you about it, you will have to talk about it
  • Put the best work first not last - what if they don't watch all of the showreel they wont see the best parts, if you put them first then they will catch the employer
  • If you only do a specific part in a project say on it what you did (e.g only character design) as it is wrong to take credit for things you did not do.
  • Should research studios and tailor the showreel to that
  • Have a title and contact details on the showreel
  • Use the best quality work files (uncompressed)
  • The sound should work with the showreel and not put people off it - if it is annoying and your work is great they might not watch it - it should have a rhythm and a climax

Quote -

‘There’s no point throwing showreels around like ninja stars, it’s wasted time and effort. Look at the companies that interest you, find out what they are looking for and pretend to be that by tailoring your showreel accordingly.’

We next went on to look at some showreels -

It was good to see what you could do with a showreel and how they are all so different . The music worked well with each showreel and they were engaging to watch, although some were slightly longer than needed, it was very helpful for when we make our own showreels for next week.

Lois Van Baarle -
I have seen her work before and loved it but I did not know she did animation or her name.
Emily showed her progression through her showreels and how they change throughout the years to suite different things.

2007 -

Susi Sie -
We looked at Susi because she has some really interesting work that you woulod think is all digitally done but in fact she films the effects live using different mediums.

This was awesome to see just how much VFX went into the movie and what you though was actually shot a mansion was actually put in after.

Louaye Moulayess - animator at Blue Sky Studios - http://louaye.com/index.html - When looking at his showreels you can see his progression and advancement in his work.

Homework -

Our homework is create our own showreel using what we created in the last few years. It is in for two weeks time.

Since I want to be more of a generalist animator I am thinking of adding a variety of work I have down.

what I am thinking to include:

  • Innovative - final piece
  • Innovative - Blue styled piece
  • 3D - animations
  • Advanced 2D - the tree growing
  • Compositing - bat animation

Animation Research and Practice - Week 3 - Homework and Research and Project Progress

Homework:

Synopsis:

A short documentary animation, which uses abstract ideas to show the audience the perspective of how a woman (my mum), describes her feelings and experiences with having depression. The animation will be a visual response to the audio track of my mum.

Treatment:

A 90 second documentary animation which looks at one woman's experience of having depression. Using narration the audience will understand how my mum's depression feels to her.

A short documentary animation, which uses abstract ideas to show the audience the perspective of how a woman (my mum), describes her feelings and experiences with having depression. The animation will be a visual response to the audio track of my mum.

The story will be told through 2D animation, using abstract ideas to convey how she feels. It will have a dark feel to it and will use different rhythms to get across the feelings.

The animation will be created using TVpaint and then After Effects will be used for any effects I want on it and Audition will be used for the sound. It will be primarily directed toward adults as it is quiet a hard theme and will be quite dark.

Article:

Javad Khajavi - Decoding the Real: A Multimodal Social Semiotic Analysis of Realityin Animated Documentary.

https://journal.animationstudies.org/javad-khajavi-decoding-the-real-a-multimodal-social-semiotic-analysis-of-reality-in-animated-documentary/

The journal above looks at how Documentary as a genre has not been properly researched. It says that this is because:

  1. documentary has such diverse forms and style, that it cannot be analysed
  2. there can be radical forms that represent reality and so cannot be analysed
  3. there is no practical model when it comes to analysing documentaries. - nothing to structure the analysis on
It then went on to discuss how it will try and use semiotic theory to try and base a model for analysing documentaries. 'Semiotics deals with messages and tries to reveal the processes of meaning making' (from article)

Before they could try and build this model they went on to talk about what the theory of semiotics was. Semiotics believe we live in a world full of signs and that everything can be referred to as signs. Documentaries are filmmakers ways of organising these signs and codes. ' Theory of semiotics will be adopted in order to propose a model for further analysis or animated documentaries'

Mode - is a different resource for communicating messages.
Jewitt says that mode is semiotic resource for making meaning that are employed in a culture, such as image, writing, gesture, gaze, speech, posture. (2009, p.1)

Modality and Modality marker - 'is a term in semiotics that concerns with the status of a text, sign or genre in representing reality ' (Chandler, 2007, p.65)
It then went on to give an example of this about looking at modality markers in World War II footage and that the audience believes a footage is from this era when the footage is 'shaky black-and-white shots' (Ward, 2008)

This essay discusses the first steps and outlines methods used to build up the framework for a larger research project, which would study four case studies of documentary film and analyse them.

The data of the study - The essay cannot just use one documentary case study documentaries can be so diverse in representing reality. So they have decided to select a sample from purposeful data sampling techniques.
They will have four group (stratum's) each stratum will then have one documentary picked from it, this documentary will be the one that fits the stratum the best. Those picked will then form the sample animation they will look at.

The four stratum's will be: Imitative, Subjective, Fantastic and Postmodern (Wells, 1997)

Imitative - Mimic dominant generic convention of live-action

Subjective - reflect subjective thoughts of an individual, usually uses interview as the soundtrack, which describe his/her experiences or situations

Fantastic - unfamiliar, usually surreal, metaphors to tell the real in a unreal way and to redefine a new reality

Postmodern - challenges ordinary ways of representing reality, questions the existence of the real itself - the documentary imagery is not 'authentic' representation of the real-world.

Framework for data analysis - 4 modes intend to study: visual, aural, motion and editing

example of modality marker is character movement, when it done differently can be abstract or life-like

Diagrams ? - need to go back over the diagrams in the essay as I think they represent the different modes they looked at and the results they got but I was a little confused with the language used.

Expected results and findings -

Kress and Van (2006) 'coding orientations are sets of abstract principles which inform the way in which texts are coded by specific social groups, or within specific instructional context' (p.165)

Each documentary uses different representations to communicate reality.

Conclusion - This essay is part of a larger project, which attempts to provide a model which will be able to analyse documentary animation.

My opinion - I found that this article was very helpful in beginning when it talked about semiotic theory but when it started to become a research project, I got very confused with what was being said and I didn't feel it was very helpful or relevant to what I want to do.

Research into Documentary animation -

I decided to research documentary animation to help with how I want to create my final film. I wanted to look at everything including:

  • Documentary Animation in general
  • How animation is used with mental health
  • Abstract Animation

I thought if I researched the above it would give me a better understanding of what I could achieve and how I would like to do it. Although I do not have a perfect idea until I get the voice clip recorded I wanted to research before hand so it would help me for when I do get the recording done.

Documentary Animation

Waltz with Bashir - Ari Folman - trailer

Ari interviewed fellow veterens of the 1982 invasion on Lebanon to reconstruct his own memories of the events.

How it was made-
http://www.studiodaily.com/2008/12/how-they-did-it-waltz-with-bashir/
It was interesting to see how they created this animation. The fact the acted out the whole film first to get all the interviews and the sounds and then they animated everything.

Animation and Mental Health

Animated Minds
http://mosaicfilms.com/animated-minds-postnatal-depression/
I liked that each story had a different style to them, the use of the animation instead of just live action I think connected to the audience more and it wouldn't of been the same if it was live action. But I feel in some parts the animation copied the voice over too much and I want my animation too not copy the voice over too much.

Website - http://www.storypick.com/mental-disorder-short-films/

I like the use of the narrative, there is no talking but you still know what it is about and get the idea behind it.

Abstract Animation

Abstract animation is a sub-genre of experimental animation. It is non-narrative experiences that rely on motion, rhythm, light and compositing.

I am looking at abstract animation as I think it can work well with the Documentary animation I want to create and the voice over I want to use. Since there is not quite a narrative to the voice over, I think experimenting with abstract animation is the best.

A few Films I have found:

Erick Oh - Heart (2012)

'One day I was watching news about political issues and started asking myself why we are destroying one another. Human history shows that life is full of conflicts and struggle. Heart is an 8 minute animated short containing no dialogue. It tells the story of abstract creatures who battle over a heart which symbolizes various differing values in life such as religion, wealth, love, natural resources and so on. In the end, their mixture of desire and greed over the heart leads to their destruction. However, the end is very open ended because it asks the question, ‘what if we approached things differently’. This film doesn’t contain any answers, instead it’s a huge question directed to everyone' - Eric Oh

I like the that is black and white and doesn't have any voice over. It uses beings that tell the story through abstract meanings.

Music video by Anthony Francisco Sheppard

I really like the style of it and although it is colourful the parts that are darker I can see would suite my animation theme. I also like the way it flows, the fluidity of the motions and how everything moves a long makes it seem like a dream something I will experiment with in mine.

Essay -

For the essay I think I want to look into documentary animation and maybe how it is used with mental health, or how animation in general is used with mental health. I will need to continue researching this and gathering information for what might be my question.

Sound -
I have re-recorded, with the help of Amo, my Mums voice over. It is a higher quality now, all I have to do is edit it down to 90 seconds. After letting Emily listen to it all the advice she gave me was to listen to it over and over again and draw what comes to me, then to add them into sequence and see what it looks like. I will take this on board as a one way of narrowing down the voice over and forming an idea, but i prefer more a structure and creating a storyboard and that is just my way of working.

Below are the new recordings of my mum:

first voice over recorded from Summer Davies-Newton on Vimeo.

second voice over recorded from Summer Davies-Newton on Vimeo.

I like that I have a lot of choice to what to do but also I feel overwhelmed with knowing where to start. For next week I want to try and get a better idea of where I want to start and the story I want to create.

Feedback -

After talking through what I had done this week, Sam seems happy with the way I am going. I feel I need to actual start to thing about the animation and what will happen and start to story it out however that may be. I hope to start this and have better idea for next week.

Professional Project - Week 3 - Five Year Plan and Project Progress

Five Year Plan

1.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

When I first came to Uni my ultimate goal was to work for Disney and move to America. But for the past year and a half that has changed and I now have no clue what I want to do. I thought I just wanted to be a 2D animator and work for a big studio, but after doing innovative and seeing how many different jobs there are in the industry, I am completely stuck to what I want to do.

2.Strengths

  • Good at working with others and by myself
  • I am a hard worker and take on feedback given to me
Weaknesses

  • Need to organise my time better (which I am getting better at)
  • My drawing skills need improving on.
  • My story ideas need improving
  • I need to improve on getting my ideas across and communicating them to people
3.Does your showreel reflect your ambition?

I currently do not have a showreel but I will start to think about it and in the near future have one.

4. 5 steps you need to take reach my goal.

Because I do not have a specific goal, I wrote 5 steps I need to do to better myself for the industry in general.

  1. Work on my drawing skills, to improve gesture drawing and my technique in general
  2. I need to work on my overall animating skills, improving on timing and once my drawing skill is up, this will also help
  3. Research into the Industry more and see what jobs stand out for me
  4. I need to keep improving on my time management
  5. Overall figure out what I want to do

Professional Project Progress

From the Feedback Jamie gave me he said he wanted to to have a revised visual script.

Old one:

Black – Script (voice over)
Red – What will happen in the animation

When an emergency

A cartoon Earth starts to walk across the screen (white background)

Like an Earthquake, Tsunami strikes a place where there is no reliable internet connection,

The cartoon Earth will trip and hit the floor (earthquake). When he hits the floor some of the water of the Earth will spill out onto the floor (tsunami).

The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster steps in,

Some other character that will represent the telecommunications cluster will step onto the screen, walking towards the Earth.

They help to provide Internet to humanitarians, non-governmental organisations, United Nations agencies and more recently hospitals that have been set up to fight Ebola.

The second character helps the Earth to it’s feet and pats it on the shoulder.

New one:

When an emergency

A cartoon Earth starts to walk across the screen (white background)

Like an Earthquake, Tsunami strikes a place where there is no reliable internet connection,

The cartoon Earth will trip over an internet wire, disconnecting the wire from the router. He will hit the floor (earthquake). When he hits the floor some of the water of the Earth will spill out onto the floor (tsunami).

The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster steps in,

Two other characters that will represent the emergency telecommunications cluster will step onto the screen, walking towards the Earth.

They help to provide Internet to humanitarians, non-governmental organisations, United Nations agencies and more recently hospitals that have been set up to fight Ebola.

The one character helps the Earth to it’s feet and pats it on the shoulder. The other character will re connect the internet router and put a label on the box.

Alternative one:

When an emergency

A cartoon Earth starts to walk across the screen (white background)

Like an Earthquake, Tsunami strikes a place where there is no reliable internet connection,

The cartoon Earth will trip over an internet wire, disconnecting the wire from the router. He will hit the floor (earthquake). When he hits the floor some of the water of the Earth will spill out onto the floor (tsunami).

The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster steps in,

Some other character that will represent the emergency telecommunications cluster (wifi signal) will step onto the screen, walking towards the Earth. The character will just be an outline and will have a little ETC somewhere on him.

They help to provide Internet to humanitarians, non-governmental organisations, United Nations agencies and more recently hospitals that have been set up to fight Ebola.

The wifi character helps the Earth to it’s feet and pats it on the shoulder, he then goes over to the router to plug it back in and the wifi will light up, showing it is connected.

It is completely Jamie's choice to which one he likes best but I didn't quite like the idea of having 3 characters and one of them sticking a sticker to the router. But I didn't want just to say no to Jamie as he is the client and it is up to him what he wants, I just wanted to suggest a different option that could be used instead.

Character Work ups -
Another thing Jamie wanted complete for this week was the characters.

EARTH - He liked the initial Earth character ideas, but didn't like the fact that they had mouths, that the eyes could give the same amount of emotion and since drawing the character I also feel they look better without mouths.

Style inspiration from:

American Express Advert - Helping your world run smoothly.

I liked the colours used in the world

I also looked at Folio Illustrations to get ideas from different peoples styles. Below is some of the people I have found and liked because of their simplicity.

Kiki L Jung

http://www.folioart.co.uk/illustration/folio/artists/illustrator/kiki-ljung

I liked the basic colours and that it used no outline, but when recreated on the Earth character I don't think it looks great because there is no outline.

Andreas Schickert -

I liked the basic cartoon simplicity and that it had some shadows. When I used this style for my animation this was the one that was most liked.

Character Drawing

WIFI - From Jamie feedback Jamie preferred the way I have drawn the character below. He also said that he didn't want eyes on this character so I have shown below with and without eyes and I have also tried to position the arms and legs in better places.

I like the look of the one with eyes as the character links in more with the Earth character, but I feel it stills looks good without the eyes. But again it is completely up to the client Jamie, I just wanted to give him options.

SATELLITE - For this character I chose to use inspiration from satellites. Jamie wanted a third character for the narrative he suggested and so I looked on the ETC (Emergency Telecommunication Cluster) website and saw the satellite image below. I tried different looking satellites but the ball one I feel looks the best and links in more with the other character.

Storyboards -
I decided to storyboard the Wifi idea with only the use of the two characters, I personally thought this idea was simple and worked best and I wanted to create the storyboard to show this idea to Jamie, so he could see where I was coming from.

Reference - I got Matt and Bethany to act out the wifi helping up the earth to help with the poses. It is bad quality and when continuing I will re film it.
https://vimeo.com/186412690

Feedback -

In today's lesson we presented all the work we had done for this week, which is above. Below is the feedback I received.

Character styles-
Jamie preferred this style but to try not having the outline around the eyes and instead the shadow.
Jamie preferred this Wifi character style and to keep the ETC on it but make it slightly bigger, he liked that there were no outlines. He liked that it had no eyes and the eyes wouldn't of added anything to it.
Jamie preferred this Satellite as the public would be able to tell what it is more easily. The other two they might not be able to tell and again it needed no eyes. BUT this character will not be used as we have decided to only have the two characters in the story.

Narrative -

After showing my storyboard he liked the idea and the general feedback was that it was good and simple.

There were only a few things to change:

At the end he wanted the Earth to look at himself and then see hospitals pop up on him, showing how  the ETC has connected him now he can connect with other people. (This is what he can do now).

Jamie also mentioned trying to add the ETC logo in somewhere else, maybe on the router, which we came up with maybe adding it as a neon light above the router when it plugged back in. I will experiment with this idea and see if it works.

Next Week -

For next week I need to:

  • create a revised storyboard with the added feedback
  • pick a scene and fully colour it (final render)
  • create an animatic with folio sound added as well
  • maybe - coloured storyboard

Animation Research and Practice - Revised Pitch and Lesson - Week 2

Revised Film Idea Pitch -

Sound

After last weeks feedback I decided to carry on with the Depression idea and to bring my parents in to record.

I got my parents to talk about their life and how they felt about depression and at certain points in their lives. My Dad was uncomfortable and is quieter in general but my mum is a very visual person and so was able to describe things clearly.

After recording 45 minutes of sound I realised that the quality was very poor and although I had a great piece to work with I cannot use it.

Animations:

I started to look at animations about depressiona and although I liked some of them, I didn't like how alot of the endings to films were happy and like the depression just went in a flash because of something. I do not want this for mine I want it to connect to audience and show that it doesn't just go away you manage to deal with it and can get help.

I also found a Ted talk and the Andrew Solomon talks about his own experience of depression and how he feels.

Andrew Solomon and his feelings - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eBUcBfkVCo

Style

I started to look at style ideas and dark styles, I like the idea of something messy but not too messy that you cant see what happening. I want to experiment with the different styles.

Feedback -
I showed the voice clip I wanted to use and although eh voice clip was good and emotional, I definitely need to re-record it with Amo's help.

Sam suggested to make sure I wasn't just matching the visual to the sound and that in my animation I use the visuals to adds to the sound not just to copy.

Sam also suggested at looking at Animated minds by Glynn Key

Lesson Sam -

In class we talked about writing synopsis and treatments. We had the task of writing a synopsis for our own projects and then giving them to someone else to write the treatment.

Initial synopsis -

A short documentary, which shows the perspective of how a woman, a person with depression, feels. The animation will be a visual response to the audio track, which is a recording of my mother describing how she feels depression is affecting her.

The treatment written by Bethany -

1 - Intro - A documentary covering the issue of depression in modern times. 5-10 minute film looking at modern women and the different aspects of their depression, told by the narrator.

2 -  Synopsis - A short documentary, which shows the perspective of how a woman, a person with depression, feels. The animation will be a visual response to the audio track, which is a recording of my mother describing how she feels depression is affecting her.

3 - Style and Pacing - The story will be done by live action and then rotoscoping in black and white over the footage of the mother talking. The edit will be sporadic in pace, slowing down for parts, such as when the drowning is happening and fast and almost scratchy for other parts, over the rotoscope. Using dirty lines, scratching at paper, messy looking, almost like the narrator is erasing and redrawing. Basically a cross of live action rotoscope as they both blend together, almost dirty in how it is done to show how unstable and serious the topic is.

4 - Software and Audience - Software will be done initially After Effects as only parts will be rotoscoped. In production TV paint will be used to go over the elements of the video. The audience will be awareness produced for charities to use in seminars.

After doing this task it was nice to see what other people thought and ideas they had on my project. I never would of thought to do rotoscoped and I like the idea and will think about it as a possibility, although if I do consider it, it will only be for part of it as I mainly want to use 2D.

Is Animation Undervalued -

We next went on to talk about animation and whether or not it is undervalued, under explored and under questioned. These points are all interesting to look at. Many people that are not in the animation industry do not realise actual how much animation is used in most modern feature films. We next went on to talk about the importance of researching and making sure we are not using words wrong and having something that backs it up, especially in our extended essays.

Homework -

  • To find an article related to our subject topics, read it and discuss if it is relevant in the next lesson.
  • rewrite the synopsis and treatment now that we know how to write them.
Links to find the article:

  • Animation studies 2.0
  • Animation studies online journal
  • Society for animation studies

We were also asked to start to think about finding a computer and space and putting our work up as we do it and to start a production board, to help with time management. As both me and Bethany are creating a final film we have decided to share a board by both of our computers and then just add or change slightly if we need different things.

Ross Lesson -

In Ross's lesson we looked at compositing shots and how to do this. We need to think about whats in the shot and what the main focus and how to show this or hint towards something, without giving the audience the full picture. This was interesting to learn and just to keep in mind when creating our pieces.

Below is a link that was posted into our animation club which show the composition in different shot. This was really helpful to see how the shots look and know I know to look out for it. I want to make sure that in my film I use some interesting compositions.

Above are just some of the images from the link. It is very cool it see each composite.

Essay Topic -

For next week I hope to have a better idea of the essay I would like to write. I know for definite that I want to look into documentary animation, but at the moment that is very broad and I need to narrow it down. I have chosen this as I find it very interesting and since I want to produce a documentary animation as a final film I feel this will link in and as I research I will hopefully be able to improve my own work.

Professional Project - Week 2 - Trends

In today's lesson we looked at trends in animation and looked into why they were trendy and why the industry should care about coming up with new trends or following them.
We first discussed how to work on a live project and what we should do:
  • Research the client and project and understand them and what they do or want
  • Make sure you read all documents regarding the brief
  • Consistent and professional communication with Client (Emily and Jamie)
  • Steady work flow to enable reviews and changes (no bulk work at end, with no feedback)
  • Never miss a deadline, keep a good schedule.
After presenting the advert trends we had brought in we went on to discuss as a class what we saw as trends at the current time and found there was a lot of focus on cute animals and specifically at the moment penguins were used a lot (British Gas advert). The theme of animals ran through the trendy adverts we were all asked to bring in for this as many of the class had an advert that showed an animal in some way.

Studios

We then went on to look at animation studies that were near by and further away, of different sizes. Discussing what they did and the kind of trends they follow. It was good to see the variety of animation studios that al did different things.

Small:

Studio AKA

I really like studio AKA as they do a lot of different projects and have a lot of different artists and animators that have so many different style. I love the fact there is so much variety as I myself do not like to do the same things every time.

STUDIO AKA Montage Reel from STUDIO AKA on Vimeo.

Second Home Studios

I like Second Home Studios as they do a lot more stop-motion animation and when we did innovative last year I really enjoyed the stop-motion side of physically creating something with your hands.
One of their Projects has been the Diet Coke adverts:
Meet Bernadette - Love It Light from Love It Light on Vimeo.

London VFX:

Now a days animation is everywhere and people don't realise it. It is a lot in the film industry with CGI and Special Effects and it opens up a lot of different opportunities that you wouldn't think you would be able to do as an animator.

Cinesite-
http://www.cinesite.com/

They are Visual Effects and Animation Studio. They have worked on some massive movies including: Iron Man 3 and Harry Potter.

Large:

Pixar
http://www.pixar.com/

I love Pixar and it would be the ultimate goal to work there just because I love their animations and the different styles they have.

You can’t hit a target if you can’t see it’.
Having a goal is really important

The task for this week is to create a 5 year plan of where we see ourselves and our goals.

  1. Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?  (Shorts Bafta winner? Pixar concept artist? VFX co-ordinator?) Try and be specific, if you know what company you want to work for, or the name of your own company include them in your statement/drawing.
  2. Make a list of your personal strengths and weaknesses with regard to the industry.
  3. Does your showreel reflect your ambition?
  4. Name 5 steps you need to take in order to reach your goal
  5. Put a rough date a rough date next to each goal

Animation Research and Practice - Study Group Research

When Raj, Bethany and I met we decided to research together narrative as we are all creating films based on a narrative we wanted to look at story arcs and how to create the best story.

We looked at many different books seeing what they said.

Below are the ones we looked at:

Writing short films -

The seven basic plots: why we tell stories -

Story: Style, Structure, Substance and the Principles of Screenwriting -

We read through the books above and it was interesting to read how to create a story that intriguing and engages the audience. You don't want a boring story and you don't want a story that's packed with everything, that the audience has no idea whats going on. Although I am doing a documentary animation this is still relevantas my animation will still have some kind of narrative to it.

Documentary Animation Research -

I also chose to research separately as I am creating a documentary animation and wanted to see if there anything I should be considering when creating it.

I also looked at different books:

Documentary: The Margins of Reality -

Documentary Storytelling: Making Stronger and More Dramatic Nonfiction Films -

The Shut Up and Shoot Documentary Guide: A Down and Dirty DV Production  -

All the books I have found above were very helpful. They talked about how all Documentary's are non-fiction but uses fact to form a story instead of fiction.Which means filmmakers use the fact they have recorded to shape a narrative. This narrative has to have an emotional impact on the audience, drawing the audience in and making them feel like they are there or experiencing it.

Taking this Research I will try and use this in my film making sure I connect with audience using an intriguing story.
