Animation Research and Practice - Study Group Research

When Raj, Bethany and I met we decided to research together narrative as we are all creating films based on a narrative we wanted to look at story arcs and how to create the best story.

We looked at many different books seeing what they said.

Below are the ones we looked at:

Writing short films -

Story: Style, Structure, Substance and the Principles of Screenwriting -

We read through the books above and it was interesting to read how to create a story that intriguing and engages the audience. You don't want a boring story and you don't want a story that's packed with everything, that the audience has no idea whats going on. Although I am doing a documentary animation this is still relevantas my animation will still have some kind of narrative to it.

Documentary Animation Research -

I also chose to research separately as I am creating a documentary animation and wanted to see if there anything I should be considering when creating it.

I also looked at different books:

Documentary: The Margins of Reality -

Documentary Storytelling: Making Stronger and More Dramatic Nonfiction Films -

The Shut Up and Shoot Documentary Guide: A Down and Dirty DV Production  -

All the books I have found above were very helpful. They talked about how all Documentary's are non-fiction but uses fact to form a story instead of fiction.Which means filmmakers use the fact they have recorded to shape a narrative. This narrative has to have an emotional impact on the audience, drawing the audience in and making them feel like they are there or experiencing it.

Taking this Research I will try and use this in my film making sure I connect with audience using an intriguing story.
