Professional Project - Week 2 - Trends

In today's lesson we looked at trends in animation and looked into why they were trendy and why the industry should care about coming up with new trends or following them.
We first discussed how to work on a live project and what we should do:
  • Research the client and project and understand them and what they do or want
  • Make sure you read all documents regarding the brief
  • Consistent and professional communication with Client (Emily and Jamie)
  • Steady work flow to enable reviews and changes (no bulk work at end, with no feedback)
  • Never miss a deadline, keep a good schedule.
After presenting the advert trends we had brought in we went on to discuss as a class what we saw as trends at the current time and found there was a lot of focus on cute animals and specifically at the moment penguins were used a lot (British Gas advert). The theme of animals ran through the trendy adverts we were all asked to bring in for this as many of the class had an advert that showed an animal in some way.

Studios

We then went on to look at animation studies that were near by and further away, of different sizes. Discussing what they did and the kind of trends they follow. It was good to see the variety of animation studios that al did different things.

Studio AKA

I really like studio AKA as they do a lot of different projects and have a lot of different artists and animators that have so many different style. I love the fact there is so much variety as I myself do not like to do the same things every time.

Second Home Studios

I like Second Home Studios as they do a lot more stop-motion animation and when we did innovative last year I really enjoyed the stop-motion side of physically creating something with your hands.
One of their Projects has been the Diet Coke adverts:

Now a days animation is everywhere and people don't realise it. It is a lot in the film industry with CGI and Special Effects and it opens up a lot of different opportunities that you wouldn't think you would be able to do as an animator.

Cinesite-

They are Visual Effects and Animation Studio. They have worked on some massive movies including: Iron Man 3 and Harry Potter.

Pixar

I love Pixar and it would be the ultimate goal to work there just because I love their animations and the different styles they have.

You can’t hit a target if you can’t see it’
Having a goal is really important

The task for this week is to create a 5 year plan of where we see ourselves and our goals.

  1. Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?  (Shorts Bafta winner? Pixar concept artist? VFX co-ordinator?) Try and be specific, if you know what company you want to work for, or the name of your own company include them in your statement/drawing.
  2. Make a list of your personal strengths and weaknesses with regard to the industry.
  3. Does your showreel reflect your ambition?
  4. Name 5 steps you need to take in order to reach your goal
  5. Put a rough date a rough date next to each goal
