Creitical and Contextual Issues - Week 10 - Metamorphosis

In this weeks lecture, we discussed the use of metamorphosis (changing shape) digitally and drawn. We started off by watching a film 'La Faim' which shows, greed and gluttony in contemporary society. The director Peter Foldes is one of the first animators to show metamorphosis through animations.

The above shows psychological realism.

The next animation we looked at was Ryan Larkin's Film 'Walking' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwKMYYfWHHo

Then we looked at Chris Landreth who created a 3D documentary animation about Ryan Larkin.

The animation above is an example of metamorphosis as it is one artists interpretation of the other artist.

At the end of the lecture we looked at the film 'Your face' By Bill Plympton. https://vimeo.com/122669829

The above is a good example of metamorphosis as throughout the animation the mans face changes shape and distorts, all while he is singing along.

After we had discussed the above we discussed our Seminar presentations.

What to include:
  • brief outline of structure and content of the presentation
  • what is the essay question - what is it that drives the question
  • can include audio- visual clips and images but not replace your ideas.

Points to remember:
  • Identifying relevant research questions
  • show genuine curiosity
  • Depth of research and in writing
  • reference other peoples theories and portray it to other people
  • use bullet points or short sentences
  • link the essay and the presentation in a way that can signpost one to the other. link ideas.
  • use interesting images.
