Character Development - Week 5 - Style and Visual Development

In this weeks lesson we looked at visually developing our characters.

Mary Blair (1911-1978):

She is known for her work on Disney's Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.

In the lesson we also discussed how we should be looking at people already in the business and keeping an eye on their work and the sort of stuff they are doing. Also collect images and drawings you like and you can come back to, to get inspiration from.

One person we looked at was Lindsey Olivares: a freelance visual development artist and illustrator, who is currently working for Sony Pictures.
This is her blog:

Her style is very unique and different to a lot of peoples which is something we have to aim for. Having our own unique style puts us apart from the crowd and will get us noticed more then someone who has the same style as everyone else.

We then watched three films with very different styles:

Protect the Human: Measles by Sandra Ensby and Lisle Turner

The Pearce Sisters by Luis Cook

The Sandman by Paul Berry

Another person we looked at was Franco, a student aged 19.

Classwork:
In pairs (Bethany and I) we had to find 3 illustration styles, which then for homework we had to replicate but using our own character.
Me and Bethany have very similar styles so we chose to use the same people.
