Character Development - Week 6 - Maquette

This week we looked at Maquettes, which means a small scale 'sketch' or rough draft of an unfinished sculpture. They are a way of communicating with a director so you can both see what the character will look like. It is also used to see the character from every angle. Computer generated animations often scan the maquette and build a 3D version from it.

"It's often when a third dimension is added to the conceptual designs that it becomes
apparent that a design will work. Many film makers find it immensely satisfying to
approach a design from different angles. To hold it, to touch it and
to picture it in their movie"

We next looked at Darren Marshal, a maquette/model maker
This is his blog:

Darren has been creating characters for 23 years and is a good example of a maquette artist. He now works for Lucas Film's as an in-house sculptor, working on projects like Star wars.

The above pictures are of some of his work on Star Wars.
